I have little interest in cricket and have been very fortunate to so far remain untouched – apart from the loss of parents at a ripe old age – by the sense of terrible bereavement that comes with the death of someone you love long before their time. Having been a former colleague of the author, however, and having read about his talented and charismatic wife, I thought this would be a suitable way to learn more about a subject one does not actually wish to think about in depth – but really ought to know and understand. Ian Ridley fulfils this in the most moving way. It is a sad and, at times, brutally honest account in which every emotion (and many you won’t have thought of) is exposed - but in a genteel and genuine manner, all of it meaningfully crafted.
